You may not realise it, but across the United States, there is a network of abandoned railway lines and forgotten footpaths that cross some of the most majestic countryside the nation has to offer. As use of trains and trams declined, they left behind clearings, many of which have been modified for present day use.
These paths are now used for everything from pony-trekking, to snowmobiling, to cycling to trekking, and allow people to explore a country they never knew existed. One such path is the Skunk Train railroad which sits within California’s famous Redwood Forest. This path has been open since 1885 and has now been converted into a rail-biking route. These rail-bikes are really unique and allow people to cycle in a custom made vehicle along the old railroad, while admiring the beauty of the ancient forest where some trees reach 300 feet in height.
It really is a sight to behold! The California Redwood Forest located about 3 hours north of San Francisco covers hundreds of square kilometres and is populated with Sequoia trees which are famed for their size and longevity, many are believed to be thousands of years old and are among the oldest living trees in the world.
The rail-bike is absolutely great for this environment as it is almost completely silent, meaning it does not negatively affect any wildlife, and it is completely safe as well because you can’t crash or fall off, and you can stop whenever you feel like. All it takes is a little leg power and you are on your merry way!
Starting from Fort Bragg, the whole journey takes just about 2 hours, travelling along Pudding Creek and into Mendocino county. There sure is the chance to see plenty of wildlife as well, ranging from various birds, including birds of prey, to otters and deer. You may wish to cycle a little faster though if you are to come into contact with one of the bears who live in the forest. Don’t worry though, bear attacks are unbelievably uncommon.
It is now believed that over 50 of these rail-tracks are now operational across the United States, so even if you aren’t in California, maybe there is one near you
