This may be the cutest story we have seen in a long time. While Disney movies have always had improbable animal friendships, such as the Fox and the Hound, or a Lion being best buds with a meerkat and a warthog in the Lion King, these are far less common in real life. This adorable duo is actually best friends despite being two completely different species.
Gunner, an 8-year-old Golden retriever, and Delta, a 10-year-old dolphin, have been great pals since they met 8 years ago at the Dolphin Research Centre in Florida, USA.
It all began when Marie Blanton, who works at the dolphin centre, brought her pup, Gunner, to work one day. On first meeting, the 8-week-old Gunner was quietly fascinated by the dolphins swimming in the water. As time passed and Gunner went closer and closer to the docks, Delta would continually come over to him. Not only that, but Delta would start brining toys over in an apparent bid to get Gunner to play with him.
Soon the two were playing away with Gunner throwing the toys back into the water and having Delta retrieve them in an unusual dog-dolphin game of fetch. Marie told INSIDER:
"When [Gunner] first went on the docks, I was expecting him to bark, or get really excited, but he did the exact opposite: He just laid down and watched. I started to notice that every time I would bring Gunner down, Delta was the first dolphin over to the dock. He would bring him his toys as if he was trying to play with him."
Over time the pair became inseparable with Gunner making his way to the docks every time he went to work with Marie and Delta being the first dolphin to race over and see him. It certainly seems from photographs and all those working at the centre, that there is genuine excitement in both animals when they get to be in each other's company.
Even though they don't get to see each other as much as they may like, Gunner and Delta are nevertheless just as excited when they are reunited.
