The Egyptian government has refuted claims by the billionaire Elon Musk that the famous Egyptian pyramids were built by aliens. Musk made the statement backing the conspiracy theory that aliens helped construct the pyramids on twitter. He tweeted, quite simply:
'Aliens built the pyramids obv'

The tweet received over half a million 'likes'. Whether or not we were meant to take the statement seriously, or whether Musk was just trolling for attention, is unclear, but the Egyptian Minister of International Co-operation Rania al-Mashat made sure to respond, stating on twitter:
"I follow your work with a lot of admiration. I invite you & Space X to explore the writings about how the pyramids were built and also to check out the tombs of the pyramid builders. Mr. Musk, we are waiting for you."

While most would instantly regard this statement as a joke, Musk's erratic behaviour in the past, from being accused of implying a rescue worker was a pedophile, to smoking marijuana on a radio talk show, to endorsing Kanye West for president and naming his child 'X AE A-12', suggests that he might not simply be trolling.
That said, Musk did later tweet out a BBC article that talks about how the Egyptian pyramids were really constructed, none of which indicates alien involvement, thereby indicating that he was probably pulling our leg this whole time!
The conspiracy surrounding the building of the pyramids gained traction in the 1990s when newly discovered Egyptian hieroglyphic carvings appeared to depict modern technology, spaceship type vehicles and alien beings. While prompting fascination and speculation archaeologists have overwhelmingly rejected the idea of alien involvement, or that these images actually depict aliens. They say in many cases these hieroglyphics have worn down over time giving the original image a resemblance to aliens and spaceships.
On Sunday, Elon Musk's SpaceX astronauts returned to Earth following their test flight on the SpaceX rocket. They descended in a parachuted splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, the first such style return to Earth by astronauts in 45 years. Musk says it is his ambition to facilitate the first manned trip to Mars and hopes to achieve this goal in the near future.
