An incident between Greek naval vessels and Turkish submarines that occurred over the last few days has been reported. There has recently been a large increase in tension between Greece and Turkey in the Aegean Sea due to Turkish plans to search and drill for oil in Greek territory, though tensions over the Aegean have existed between the two countries throughout modern history.
The recent incident was said to involve a "Type 209" Turkish submarine that is believed to be exploring an area next to Evia, an island attached to mainland Greece. Responding to this, the Greek military sent naval vessels and accompanying helicopters in order to both ward off the Turkish vessel and check whether it had laid any instrument used for oil exploration or extraction.
Upon locating the Turkish submarine, the Greek military hit it with persistent non-lethal high frequency sounds that would have caused severe discomfort to those inside it. The vessel was also hit with a blaringly loud version of The Beatles 1966 hit song 'Yellow Submarine'.
Eventually, the submarine made its escape. During recent searches of Greek waters, a total of 5 Turkish submarines have been located, mostly in the South-Eastern Aegean. The Greek submarines are reported to hold a technological superiority over Turkish submarines due to the fact that their stealth technology means they can go undetected by Turkish aerial and underwater search tools, which means Greeks can easily track down Turkish subs.
This is not the only incident between Greek and Turkish naval forces that has recently made headline news. On August 12th, the Greek Limnos frigate collided with the Turkish frigate the Kemal Reis as it escorted it through a tight international boundary. While the Greek frigate did not sustain damage the Kemal Reis suffered a hole in its stern.

While the recent story may have a small funny side, the seriousness of the situation should not be underestimated. According to greekcitytimes naval sources said in their report:
"We never made jokes about these issues and never misinformed our readers. What we mention here happened exactly as we describe it and is a lesson for the Turks, but also a lesson for the Greek politicians."
