It has been revealed that construction of 'Akon City' in Senegal is now underway. Akon, the American music star, real name Aliaune Thiam, has secured $6 billion in investment and been gifted 2,000 acres of land from the Senegalese government in order to build the city, which he claims will be at least partly run on his own crypto-currency 'Akoin'.
He claims that the city will be futuristic and based upon the fictional African city of Wakanda from the Black Panther franchise and that the use of crypto currency will overcome issues facing many African countries such as lack of access to bank accounts, inflation and corruption.
This movie (Black panther) literally made an idea of what Africa could really be. It's just ironic that I was already working on this before the movie came out, but it's something that helped me a lot when I was trying to explain to explain to people what I was trying to do.
At the centre of the city will be a $1 billion 5,000 bed hospital along with a police station, a mall, an airstrip and a waste facility. The city will also be entirely powered through renewable energy, in the form of solar-power.
Akon has already promised to deliver through his 'Akon Lighting Africa' project to deliver solar-power to 600 million people in Africa, half of the continent's population.
Some have asked where Akon is finding the money to do these things, he is wealthy, but he is certainly not wealthy enough to do these things on his own. The website celebritynetworth.com says Akon has amassed around $80 million over his career.
The first source of money for the city is coming from U.S. engineering firm KE International, who recently awarded Akon with a $6 billion contract to build Akon City in Senegal. The company previously said it had already secured $4 billion from investors for the first two phases of Akon City's construction.
The second source of money, for his lighting project, comes from a state backed Chinese firm known as China Jiangsu International.
This has led many to suggest that Akon is, in fact, merely a front for foreign investors looking to build for-profit infrastructure in Africa and using Akon as a friendly-face popular in Africa for projects that may otherwise be seen as suspicious or even detrimental to independent African economic growth.
Akon himself has a long-history of lying and deception. When first entering the music business Akon reported that he had been imprisoned in the United States for being part of a luxury car-theft ring and served 3 years. In fact, it was later revealed that Akon had only once been arrested for illegal gun possession and received 3 years probation.
He has also been criticised for simulating a sex-act with a 15-year-old during a show in Trinidad.
