A 21-year-old seamstress from Long Island, New York, is catching attention online and turning heads offline with her amazing dress designs. Angel Clayton has been designing dresses for over 5 years and bases most of her designs on historical styles, particularly those from the Renaissance period and from the 1800s.
Despite being almost entirely self-taught, Angela has only been sewing for around five years and had created some fantastic creations during just the first two years of trial-and-error design.
The designs incorporate complex patterns and design features such as bodice forming, ruche and detailed stitching. These style techniques have brought wide acclaim and resulted in Angela's creations being purchased by fans from around the world.
Angela was originally involved in cosplay, in which individuals dress as fictional characters or people from history, and it was from there her love of dress design bloomed. She says on her official website:
"I've been sewing for five years and focused on period costumes and original designs for the last three. I try to mix the elements of historical costumes that I love most – like the detail work and extravagant silhouettes – with modern materials and textures to create pieces with a lot of visual interest and depth."
She adds:
"I spend most of my time working on detailed costumes which involve a lot of beading and work done by hand. But I also enjoy making structured garments that play with seaming and pattern matching. In the past three years I have made over fifty complete costumes, more than twenty hats, and dozens of foundation garments (including corsets, hoop skirts, and petticoats). I draft the vast majority of my own patterns, and am currently working with The McCall Pattern Company to make some of them commercially available."
