Marijuana activists in Washington D.C. are handing out free cannabis to those individuals who have gotten the Covid-19 vaccine. They hope that the move will not only encourage people to go and get the vaccine but also spread the word about the beneficial effects they claim comes from smoking marijuana.
DC Marijuana Justice will be giving pre-rolled joints to those individuals who present their vaccine cards, but it is unclear just how large their supply is or how many people so far have received the free joints.
Nikolas Schiller, the co-founder of DC Marijuana Justice told reporters that the pandemic had meant that homegrown cannabis could not be shared, and that their project would allow people to celebrate both the end of the pandemic and the legalisation of marijuana. He said:
"We are looking for ways to safely celebrate the end of the pandemic and we know nothing brings people together like cannabis. DCMJ believes that cannabis should be consumed safely and responsibly, and the pandemic has made this incredibly difficult for many adults to share their homegrown cannabis. When enough adults are inoculated with the coronavirus vaccine, it will be time to celebrate - not just the end of the pandemic, but the beginning of the end of cannabis prohibition in the United States."
A big thank you goes out to @CapitolHemp, @KingWeedShop, @PhoneHomie, @mrpandadc, Bud Appetit, and so many others for donating cannabis & helping with #JointsForJabs! pic.twitter.com/2eX192YQ3n

The project is similar to another one taking place in Michigan where a cannabis business, Greenhouse of Walled Lake, has been handing out free joints to those who have been vaccinated. Jerry Millen, who owns the business, said:
"Our goal is to raise awareness of the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccination as we as a community battle this horrible pandemic. 'Pot for Shots' is our way of showing our commitment in assisting helping the community get back to normalcy. We support the safe and responsible use of cannabis and hope this is the beginning of the end of this insidious pandemic."
As it currently stands, all individuals must be over 21-years-old and present an official vaccine card before receiving the free marijuana. Cannabis has been legal in Washington D.C. since 2015 after it was endorsed via a referendum in 2014. Cannabis has been legal in the state of Michigan since 2018, when it became the first midwestern state to legalise the drug.
