A heart-warming story has emerged from Ireland of a Golden Retriever who was rescued in the mountains after spending two-weeks lost in the wilderness.
Irena had been walking her two-dogs Harley and Neesha in the snowy Wicklow Mountains near her home when they spotted a roe-deer on the hillside. Guided by instinct, the two dogs ran after the deer and were quickly out of sight. Despite a frantic and lengthy search, Irena could not find the two-dogs and had to return home. Thankfully she found Harley the following day, but there remained no sign of 8-year-old Neesha.
Shannah, Irena's daughter, spoke of how devastated she was at the thought that she would never see Neesha again. She told reporters:
"I just pictured her shivering in the cold, it was awful."
Fears grew for Neesha given the fact that she had not been seen for two-weeks and temperatures fell well below zero amidst heavy snowfall. Neesha was also thought unlikely to be able to find food.
Two weeks later, doctors Jean Francois Bonnet and Ciara Nolan, were taking a hike in the Wicklow Mountains, when they stumbled across a Golden Retriever. It was instantly clear that the dog was alone and had been living in terrible wintry conditions, given that she was weak, tired and freezing. The pair instantly wrapped Neesha up in warm clothing and carried her to safety.
Once she had been warmed up and fed, an animal shelter was able to trace Irena and Shannah and reunite them with Neesha. Thankfully it appears as though Neesha has no long-term damage from her weeks in the wilderness. It is however, entirely unclear how she was able to live so long without shelter or a known food-supply.
Irena expressed her amazement, saying:
"Maybe she got a bit of shelter in the forest, I just don't know."
A video of the rescue soon went viral on social-media.
