A teen has been putting his sewing skills to great use, making bow ties for dogs in a bid to get them new homes.
Darius Brown, 14, who was born with speech and motor-skills problems, learned to sew as part of therapy when he was just 8 years old. His sister Dazhai spent hours with him teaching him how to sew different items. When in 2017 he saw all the dogs left homeless and in shelters by Hurricane Irma, he decided to start making bow-ties for the dogs. He believes, and the evidence has shown, that making the bow-ties for the dogs makes them more likely to be adopted by those people visiting the shelter looking to rescue a dog.
He was already well adept at making bow-ties, making a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bow-tie when he was just 8.
Darius' mum, Joy, said of her son's work:
"He was so determined. He sat and watched Dazhai for months and took it all in. He started out cutting fabric and pretty soon, he was running the sewing machine by himself."
Soon after Hurricane Irma, Darius sewed and deliver 25 bow-ties to New York City's ASPCA animal shelter. He said:
"I saw how happy the people at the shelter were to get the bow-ties and how much the dogs liked them, and I decided to make more. I came up with a goal to give bow-ties to an animal shelter in every state."

Darius now thinks that he has probably sewn around 600 bow-ties for dogs, which have been shipped all over the United States to different animal shelters. He says he especially likes helping those dogs who are finding it difficult to find homes due to being older or suffering from disabilities.

Now, a GoFundMe page is helping pay for materials for Darius to continue his good work. It has already raised almost $100,000. It reads:
"Each donation no matter how big or small will help Sir Darius reach his goal and will allow him to help more dogs and cats waiting for forever homes. I understand that everyone is not in the position to make a donation, but I would truly appreciate if you can share Sir Darius's campaign with others and on social media to help him reach his goal. Thank you for taking the time to read about my little brother's "PAW-SOME Mission". Blessings to you all! Stay PAW-SOME!!!!!"
