Two teenage girls have been charged with the felony murder of an UberEats driver in Washington D.C. after they attempted to carjack his vehicle. The girls are aged 13 and 15 and are both known to reside in the Washington D.C. area.
It is believed that there was a struggle as the girls attempted the carjacking and that 66 -year-old Mohammad Anwar was thrown from the vehicle. The car then crashed, after which police pulled the two girls from the wreckage.
Both girls were carrying stun-guns that they attempted to use in the robbery.
Anwar had emigrated to the United States from Pakistan in 2014 to get a better life and had been working for UberEats delivering meals during the pandemic.
Video footage showed the girls attempting the robbery and the ensuing struggle. It is thought that Anwar was hanging out of the vehicle when one of the girls attempted to put the car in gear, throwing him from the vehicle. It is unclear as to whether he was then run over by the car as it was driven away.
Both girls will now appear in court on March 31st and face both felony murder charges and carjacking charges. If convicted, they could face life imprisonment despite their young age.
A GoFundMe page was set up by Anwar's grieving family, to cover funeral expenses and help them get back on their feet. They said in a statement:
"Mohammad Anwar was a hard-working Pakistani immigrant who came to the United States to create a better life for him and his family. He was simply at work yesterday evening, providing for his family, when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence. The details are still being investigated, however we know that Anwar was working on an UberEats delivery when two assailants attempted to carjack him in Navy Yard."
UberEats said they were devastated by the news of Anwar's death.
The fundraising page, which aimed to raise $100,000, has now raised over $415,000, which will go a long way in assisting the family after such a devastating event.
