A kind-hearted and creative 14-year-old in the United States is sewing bowties and other accessories for dogs in the hope that it helps them find their forever home.
Darius Brown sews all of the little dog bowties himself, as well as the other accessories, after being taught how to sew by his sister when he was very young.
He realised that, by sewing cute bowties for dogs it makes them a little more likely to be adopted when they are in animal shelters. This is particularly true if people are searching images online, as it can make them pause and look again, and offer that little bit more hope to a homeless pooch.
Brown had the idea for the accessories after he realised that so many dogs had been made homeless by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida. So far, he has sewn over 1,000 bowties and donated to over 30 shelters. He has also been selling accessories online to help raise money for shelters in need.
Brown told My Modern Met:
"The most rewarding part is when shelters reach out to me and let me know a dog that wore one of my bow ties has been adopted. It makes me feel good to know I played a part in helping them find a forever home."
He added:
"I plan to resume [my] Pawsome Mission in the summer of 2021, visiting different shelters, participating in adoption events, donating my bow ties to shelters, and spotlighting their adoptable dogs on social media. In the future, I plan to adopt my own dog. Unfortunately, where I live they don't allow pets. I plan to adopt a few dogs and be a foster parent for dogs."
So far, Brown has raised over $100,000 via his GoFundMe page. You can donate to his mission by clicking here:
An extract on the page, written by his sister, reads:
"Sir Darius became very emotional watching all the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. As he watched he saw people being rescued but his question was "who is saving the animals?" Sir Darius found out on social media that some rescue dogs were being transferred from the devastation in Texas and Puerto Rico to the ASPCA in NYC. He immediately wanted to help them. He thought of a very unique way to use his skills to help the displaced dogs."
