A poll looking at the potential of celebrities to become President of the United States has found some surprising results. The poll, conducted by Piplsay, found that 46% of Americans would be favourable to Dwayne' The Rock' Johnson becoming President.
The wrestling turned movie star is favoured by almost half the population and he has already made hints that he may be seriously considering a bid for the job as the most powerful person in the world.
He said regarding running in the 2024 election:
"If that's what the people wanted. I would consider a presidential run in the future if that's what the people wanted. Truly I mean that, and I'm not flippant in any way with my answer. That would be up to the people… So, I would wait, and I would listen. I would have my finger on the pulse, my ear to the ground."
"The most important thing right now is strong honest leadership from our current and future leaders of this country."
The Rock has previously decided against running, in 2018 he told reporters:
"It's a position that requires years of hard work and experience to learn the skills."
The poll also found that Will Smith would be a popular candidate for President amongst millennials and Gen Z, whilst Angelina Jolie and Oprah Winfrey were popular among women of all ages. Matthew McConaughey was a popular choice to run as Governor of Texas.
35% of millennials and 30% of Gen Z thought that celebrities would make good candidates for political positions, showing that, in general, younger people may be less opposed to celebrities being involved in politics than middle-aged Americans.
The Rock would hardly be the first American celebrity to become a politician. Many of the most famous presidents, for better or worse, have come from showbusiness. Ronald Reagan, who was President for two terms in the 1980s, made his name as an actor in Hollywood, while Arnold Schwarzenegger was a huge movie star both before and after he became governor of California.
The Rock wouldn't even be the first professional wrestler to be elected to high office. Wrestler Jesse Ventura who made his name with the WWF, became Governor of Minnesota in 1999 and served until 2003. He is currently a member of the US Green party.
