Reddit contributor, Yamaha234, has revealed what his in-laws found when they ripped up the carpet in their home, a giant Monopoly board.
The board had been painted onto the floor and is based on the US version of the game. It is entirely accurate and must have taken hours or even days to complete.
Stretching the size of the room, it has all the classic squares, such as community chest, chance, pass go, just visiting and a jail.
The discovery was a complete surprise and it is unclear how the board was used or when it was exactly completed. There is a good chance though, that whoever created the board also had some sort of pieces and money set up for the particular board, and it doesn't seem likely that they would have used regular-sized monopoly pieces, or regular sized monopoly houses or hotels to play the game. It can only be guessed where the pieces are now.
Some have said that despite this appearing to be a unique find, many basements in the US in the 1950s had a Monopoly board painted on them or built using tiles. A Redditor commented:
"Showed this to my wife, and she reminded me that there's a whole neighborhood near us, built in the mid-50s, that has game boards painted or tiled onto their basement floors. Seems to have been a selling point or something."
Another Redditor asked whether the homeowners planned to keep the board, they asked:
"Did this change their plans? (I hope so, think of the grandchildren)."
To which the original poster replied:
"[I'm] trying to convince them to cover it in epoxy and do the rest of the flooring around it how they originally wanted."
Monopoly is the most popular board game to have ever been created. Since it was first created in 1935, it has sold over 250 million editions and has been licensed in 103 countries. There have been a very large number of different sets, sometimes based on different cities around the world, or on elements of popular culture such as movies. All the games however follow pretty much the same rules.
While criticised by some for encouraging greed, the original creator intended for the game to be a tool with which to show the dangers of capitalism and monopoly business.
