28 Palestinians have been killed after the Israeli military bombed the Gaza Strip. 10 children are known to be among the dead. 106 others are said to have been wounded.
The Israeli state has claimed that the strikes were targeted at members of Hamas, who control the Gaza Strip, and who had fired dozens of rockets into Israeli territory. Minor injuries were reported from these rocket attacks.
The rocket attacks from Hamas were in response to an ongoing feud in East Jerusalem, where worshippers at the Al-Aqsa mosque have been attacked by far-right Israelis and Israeli security forces. Tensions simmered after a court ruled that Palestinians in East Jerusalem must be thrown out of their homes and given to Jewish settlers.

In the clashes at the Al-Aqsa mosque, over 300 pro-Palestinian protestors were wounded. 228 required hospital treatment. 3 Israeli police officers were also hurt.
An ultra-nationalist Israeli group, who some refer to as neo-fascist and profoundly racist, were redirected after a planned march through a mainly Arab neighbourhood. The march was part of a celebration of the Israeli take-over of Jerusalem.
Among the areas hit by Israeli airstrikes was a refugee camp. Among the three killed at the camp were a woman and a disabled man.
Two of the children killed belonged to the same family. These include 11-year-old and 7-year-old siblings. They were apparently playing in the street when they were killed. Another 10-year-old girl is also reported dead.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated the bombings will continue, he said:
"Whoever attacks us will pay a heavy price."
Over recent years more and more Palestinians have been forced out of their homes by Israelis and more and more Israelis, usually ultra-orthodox Jews, have moved onto Palestinian land, which they claim was given to them by God. This is in contravention of international law and is seen by many as a long-term plan to wipe out the Palestinian people entirely.
Some analysts say moderate Palestinians have turned towards militant and extremist groups as they realise that the Israeli state refuses to recognise the internationally agreed borders between Palestine and Israel.
Hamas is widely seen as an extremist, Islamic fundamentalist, organisation. It controls the Gaza Strip while the moderate Fatah party controls the West Bank.
