Japanese nature-lover and wood-carving artist Mori Kono creates impressively detailed animal sculptures on wood. The artist and his team, MK carving & sculpting, live in Canada and utilise a wide range of wood available to them including, red cedar, birch and alder. The series of sculptures includes bears, racoons, rabbits, owls and chipmunks. Often carved to look as if they hang from wooden logs, or crawling from forest trees, the artworks capture each animal's playful nature.
Kono mostly works with a variety of power tools and uses a small handheld chisel to carve details like the fur and feather or fine points around the animals' eyes. After the carving process is complete, the artist adds the final touches through the use of colours, allowing the sculpted animal figures to stand out from their surroundings.
Kono works mainly on a commision basis, with each piece being tailored to the preferences of the individual customer. The team's aim is to bring back nature's wonders into modern society.
The team says:
"If our completed works of art are able to contribute to society […] to have a deeper feeling and respect towards nature and the wild, then that is our greatest dream!"
