A teenage boy in Scotland has staged a protest against his school's dress code by wearing his sister's skirt to school.
At his school, Moffat Academy, the dress code states that pupils should only wear a skirt or long trousers to school. When some pupils wore short trousers they were told to go home and change.
Shane Richardson, who is 16, angered by this, borrowed a skirt from his younger sister and began wearing it to school. It has resulted in numerous national and international media organisations picking up on the story.
The school now says the dress policy will soon be changed.
Shane's mother, Hayley, told reporters:
"On Tuesday this week, Shane said to me: 'Mum, can I get a skirt?'"
She went on to say:
"Every single year when the weather gets hot, the boys go to school in shorts. All of a sudden this rule is being hammered into the school. The last two days when it has been super hot they have just sat in class and it is almost like sitting in a green house."
Now that the matter is being dealt with in a fortnight, Mrs. Richardson said:
"They will be suffering for the next two weeks. This is Scotland, by the time that meeting comes it is going to be snowing. It is hot now and 16 June is another 10 days away."
A spokesperson from the council in which the school is situated said:
"Feedback from young people, parents and carers to the school has indicated that it is time to review the policy and make changes. Whilst this engagement is ongoing, pupils have been reminded to adhere to the agreed policy which enables the school to maintain high standards and excellence before any changes are finalised. An update to the parent council following this engagement has already been scheduled for 16 June."
