A video posted on TikTok involving a woman pushing a bear off a wall has gone viral. The incident is said to have taken place in the San Gabriel Valley, near Los Angeles, California. Brown bears are a common sight in the region and frequently venture into populated areas in search of food.
The footage was posted online by (@bakedlikepie) who is the cousin of the woman in the video - Hailey. The video shows a bear and her cubs climbing the wall of the woman's garden. Her dogs run towards the bear barking and snapping at it, to which the bear responds with a few swipes of its paw. It is then that the woman runs into the shot and pushes the brown bear from the wall. She then makes a hasty retreat with one of her dogs in hand.
The text posted alongside the video says:
"My cousin Hailey yeeted a bear off her fence today and saved her dogs. How was your Memorial Day?! (WTF?!)"
In a comment, Brenda adds:
"PSA: The dogs and her (Hailey) are okay. No, she doesn't do this on the regular. They were all outside gardening when the pups noticed the bear."
Hailey said afterwards:
"I was in the mountains, so this was actually really normal and in summers [bears] always come down. They start barking – our dogs – and I thought they were just barking at a dog because they always bark at dogs or squirrels or whatever because they're dumb."
Although injuries from brown bears are rare, they can cause serious injury if they feel threatened and have to fight back. Brown bears mostly eat fruit but are omnivorous and more than happy to scavage from dumpsters. In California, due to brown bears consistently moving into human habitations, some have had to be sedated by animal control and then driven deep into the countryside to be released.
