Billy Ray, who was a homeless man living in Kansas City begging for change from passers-by, saw his life take a turn for the better following a simple act of good will.
Sarah Darling, a woman who passed by the then 55-year-old man, dropped some change into his cup. Accidentally however, she also dropped her engagement ring along with the money.
Although Harris thought about selling the ring for extra cash, he decided to return it to the woman a few days later. The estimate he got for the ring's value was $4,000.
Harris said of the kind act:
"I am not trying to say that I am no saint, but I am no devil either."
In order to thank him, Darling and her husband, Bill Krejci, set up a fundraiser for Harris with the aim to help him get back on his feet.
Darling told TODAY:
"We set a goal for a thousand dollars. We set it up because a lot of people who had been touched by the story expressed interest in helping Billy Ray."
The fundraiser gained a huge response, ultimately gathering over $190,000 in just three months.
Upon receiving the funds, Harris asked for the assistance of a lawyer who helped him put the money in a trust. Harris has since been able to purchase a car and even pay a deposit for a house.
