Over 22,000 photos were submitted for the sixth annual contest for Bird Photographer of the Year.
The top prize was awarded to Mexican photographer, Alejandro Prieto, for his photo of a Greater Roadrunner looking down the border wall that divides the United States and Mexico.
The grand prize for the top contestant that Prieto won is $6,900 along with the much sought-after title of Bird Photographer of the Year.
"The border wall crosses deserts, mountains, and even mangroves. It is not just desert, and is in fact very biodiverse with more than 1,500 animal and plant species threatened by the wall. I have watched many different animals reach the wall before turning around and heading back."
Prieto's photo is just one among many incredible photos that exhibit the beauty of birds.
One of the contest's goals is to contribute to the coservation of birds around the world. As such, the contest donated over $11,000 to Birds on the Brink, a partner charity that supports conservation projects.
