The FBI has released previously classified documents about 9/11 after an executive order was made by US President Joe Biden.
The release was made after lengthy appeals from victims of 9/11 who wished to know of potential involvement by the Saudi Arabian government.
However, one of the files documenting an interview in 2015 with an official from the Saudi Consulate is heavily censored.
In the interview, the individual states that he allowed two of the men who were later involved in the mass hijacking to stay at his apartment, and that he had helped them settle into living in Los Angeles. He is also known to be close to two others known to have helped in the preparation for the attacks. The individual was an Al Qaeda facilitator who the Saudi government wished to sack for distributing extremist Islamic literature.
While in the files, the individual is referred to as PII it is believed that his real identity is Mussaed Ahmed al-Jarrah.
Sources told the FBI that Mussaed Ahmed al-Jarrah was extremely vocal in his extremist beliefs and that he held a deep hatred for non-Muslims, including Jews and Christians.
The FBI document reads:
"PII was forthcoming with numerous specific details regarding his ... employment with the Consulate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Los Angeles, [and] anecdotes of personal interactions with Consular leadership."
In the document it is said that PII described his duties at the consulate as:
"Providing assistance to Saudi college students studying in the US, providing translation assistance, executing administrative tasks, and distributing literature on Islam."
It is unclear where Mussaed Ahmed al-Jarrah currently resides or whether he was ever given US citizenship.
The leader of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden was a Saudi national with strong family and business links to the reigning Saudi monarchy. However, Al Qaeda also regard the Saudi monarchy as traitors to Islam which has allowed Western forces, such as the US, to use Saudi Arabia as a base to carry out military attacks in the Middle East.
Following the 9/11 attacks, the bin Laden family in the United States were one of the few groups of people to be allowed to board a plane to safety. Most bin Laden family members have denounced the 9/11 attacks and the Al Qaeda organisation.
