Two major YouTube creators have joined forces to save the seas. MrBeast and Mark Rober, two of the biggest YouTube creators in the world, have joined together to raise $30 million for Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Cleanup who hope to remove 30 million lbs of trash from the world's seas, oceans and rivers. The campaign is ging under the hashtag #TeamSeas.
In a video promoting the endeavour, the two can be seen assisting in cleaning up the ocean.
MrBeast says in the video:
"For every one dollar you guys donate… one pound less of trash will be in the ocean."
YouTube has itself agreed to donate $400,000 towards the project. Anyone wishing to support the project can either go to the #TeamSeas website or via a link on participating YouTube channels and videos.
This isn't the first time that the YouTubers have pitched int o help the environment. In 2019 they worked on the #TeamTrees campaign, which planted 20 million trees to help fight global warming. While the campaign attempted to raise $20 million it ended up reaching $23 million.
These two aren't the only YouTubers pitching in, others include:
AzzyLand, DanTDM, TommyInnit, LinusTechTips, TierZoo, LEMMiNO, The Infographics Show, Hannah Stocking, Dhar Mann and Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD).
In total, 145 individuals will take part, who have a combined following of 1 billion on the YouTube site.
Ocean Conservancy and the Ocean Cleanup state that, at present, 150 million metric tons of plastic is already in the world's water systems. This plastic causes huge harm to ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them. Worryingly, they state that as much as 11 million metric tons enter the ocean every year. On their website, they state:
"The ocean and the life within it are incredibly important. Aside from the water we drink, the ocean produces half the air we breathe every day. So it's a no-brainer that keeping it clean and healthy is critical to our survival. Unfortunately our ocean—and the rivers that feed it—are full of plastic trash. It's estimated that there are 200M tons of plastic already circulating in marine environments, with an estimated 11M tons entering the ocean EVERY YEAR. Pollution from items like bottles, bags, straws and abandoned fishing gear is a health crisis for our entire planet."
