This son converted his own basement into a mini home to house his ageing parents. Schon Miller, realised that his father and mother, Bonnie and George Miller, both 87 years old, were finding it more difficult to move around their own home due to his father becoming forgetful and his mother suffering a series of falls that left her injured. While they enjoyed living independently, they needed extra support and Miller did not wish them to live in a retirement community.
While at first Miller and his wife did look for a new home with a separate living space, none of these were appropriate. Instead, they decided to remodel the whole underground of their home. To do this, they first got rid of any items they did not need such as musical instruments, a pool table, and a karaoke area. They then set to work building and constructing the entire floor from the ground up. Despite some setbacks along the way, the eventual goal was achieved, a living space far more welcoming than could have possibly been originally imagined.
They then renovated the home to their parent's required standards. While the remodelling is beautiful, it is also arranged and designed to ensure safety and ease of mobility for both parents, with features such as handrails and correctly heighted furniture.
Miller said:
"We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind. One can't live alone without the other and we didn't want either one to end up in a nursing home."
The remodelling was then carried out as a big reveal as neither parent was aware of what way the remodelling was taking shape. In the video of the reveal, the parents' joy and happiness at their new home can't be hidden. With Bonnie exclaiming:
"Oh my God!"
