A member of the Belgian parliament has said that he is going to take his entire next year of salary in the form of cryptocurrency Bitcoin.
Christophe De Beukelaer made the announcement on his personal blog, in which he stated that he believed the growth of cryptocurrency was going to be exponential. He said:
"With the Blockchain, we are at the dawn of a revolution of the same order as what we experienced with the Internet 30 years ago. All sectors, starting with finance, insurance and governance, are going to be disrupted and we must prepare for them. Abroad, large institutions are starting to invest massively in crypto-assets so as not to miss this gigantic opportunity. It is the role of the politician to raise public awareness of these societal changes that are coming. We can no longer remain in ignorance of this new world! It's a bit like clinging to the carriage or candle as cars and light bulbs appear. Adoption is going to be exponential."
"I am the first in Europe, but not in the world, to want to shine a spotlight on cryptocurrencies with such an approach. The new mayor of New York, Eric Adams, received for 3 months his salary in Bitcoins in order to make New York the Center of Bitcoin. I think it's not too late for Brussels and Belgium to be at the forefront of the cryptocurrency industry. We already have some great companies in the field (KeyRock, Venly, Settlemint, Logion, NGrave, Argent...) but it is time to position ourselves clearly and create a real ecosystem."
The member of parliament hopes that this move will encourage others to take an interest in cryptocurrencies and that it could spark a debate regarding the nature of our current monetary system.
While it is not possible for the politician to be paid directly in Bitcoin, the MP promises to convert his regular pay-check into Bitcoin as soon as he receives it.
A number of nations, including El Salvador, and most recently Tonga, are debating, or have already adopted Bitcoin an official currency.
