Actors & Others For Animals, a charity on which the late actress Betty White served as a board member, has thanked all those who donated and promoted the cause and earned the charity $12.7 million dollars in honour of what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday.
JoAnne Worley and Loretta Swit were among the celebrities to promote the #BettyWhiteChallenge campaign which asked everyone who wanted to do so to donate $100 in memory of Betty White.
The campaign took place across social media and over 400,000 people donated.
The organisation also encouraged people to donate to local shelters and other animal welfare organisations. As such, shelters in Philadelphia raised $100,000 and Los Angeles Zoo raised $70,000 while other shelters across the country benefitted.
Betty White was a famed animal lover who spent her life caring for animals and raising money for animal charities, she died on December 31st 2021 aged 99.
Prior to her death and in anticipation for this charity event marking her 100th birthday, White recorded a short video, in which she said:
"I just want to thank you all for your love and support over the YEARS. Thank you so much, and stick around!"
The team from Actors & Others For Animals said in a statement:
"As we continue to see numbers coming in from all over the world, it's just absolutely amazing how much money all of you raised for animals."
Betty White was one of the most famed actresses of her generation, with a career spanning from the 1930s to the 2020s. In the 1950s, she was one of the first ever women to work as a producer, developing the sitcom' Life with Elizabeth'. However, it was in front of the camera she would become an icon, starring in 'The Golden Girls' and 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'. Her illustrious career brought her eight Emmy Awards in various categories, three American Comedy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
