It has been revealed that Hollywood mega-star Keanu Reeves donated 70% of his acting fee from the first Matrix film to leukaemia research to help battle the deadly disease that his younger sister fought for over 10 years.
Keanu's sister was diagnosed with the disease in 1991 and was eventually successfully cured of the blood cancer. It was in 1999 when Reeves was paid $35million for the first instalment of the film that he decided to make the donation.
Kim is now 55 years old.
It is also said that Reeves spent $5 million on therapies and medical treatments to help his younger sister.
Reeves previously said of his sister:
"She was always there for me, you know. I will always be here for her."
Reeves has now also set up a foundation to help those affected by cancer, something that he does not speak about often, saying:
"I have a private foundation that's been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children's hospitals and cancer research. I don't like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does."
This is hardly the first time that Reeves has been noted for his charitable work and his kind-heartedness when it comes to financial decisions. It was reported by the Wall Street Journal in 2001 that Reeves gave a huge amount of his fee for the second and third Matrix films to those working on the film, and when he played in the John Wick series he is known to have gifted very expensive watches to those working on the set.
An enduring meme has gained popularity over the last 10 years focusing on Keanu Reeves' kind nature, including him standing in a subway to give a woman a seat, and feeding pigeons in the park. It has even led him to be given the moniker 'the internet's boyfriend'.
