A state trooper in the United States has been praised after saving the life of a baby bear cub in the state of New Hampshire.
State Trooper, Thomas Owens of Carroll Police Department, was on regular duty when he came across the not-unusual sight of a mother bear and her cubs crossing the road in a rural region of the state. Like many times before, he slowed down and stopped his vehicle to allow the bears to cross. What he did notice though was that while the mother and three cubs crossed easily, the mother turned around and crossed back across the road several times.
Realising something was wrong, officer Owens got out of his vehicle to investigate. While it is highly recommended to avoid any contact with bears whatsoever Owens knew that there must be a serious issue. Upon reaching the side of the road the bears had originally emerged from he soon realised what the issue was.
It appeared that one of the cubs was unwell and couldn’t keep up. When officer Owens turned to look for the mother bear again, she had fled, meaning that the officer now had the responsibility of getting the baby bear to safety.
He immediately called in animal protective services from the New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife department. Amazingly, when the team arrived, they found yet another cub that had been abandoned and who was also sick.
After a brief photograph, the two cubs were taken in for treatment and now both are said to be doing well. It is hoped they can be returned to the wild or even reunited with their family. The entire event was caught on camera in this amazing footage:
