A woman who decided to escape the hubbub of city life and create her own beautiful home in the wilderness has been showing off her unique homestead to an array of interested parties. What is so unique about the new abode is that the woman, named only in public as Rosie, has created the new living quarters using old shipping containers.
Built in Coromandel, New Zealand, surrounded by amazing scenic views and wildlife, the home is completely off-grid is made up of 5 individual 20-foot shipping containers complete with 12 solar panels and 2x 25,000 litre water storage tanks. Shipping containers are fast becoming a popular alternative for homes given their relative low price and their long durability.
Rosie says the decision to go off-grid after selling her home in the city of Auckland was easy, and it was made even more attractive given the pandemic and lockdown situation we have all been living under for the past few years.
The new home is surrounded by a beautiful garden and the home is heated with a large fireplace. It even contains a huge library that Rosie has built up over the last 20 years, a king-size bed in the bedroom, and a bathroom with panoramic views over the local area.
While Rosie is only currently using the home intermittently, she does intend to move there permanently at one point in the future. She says:
"Making a space of my own has been a really interesting journey because I've planned this house years ago and it's been a really lovely way for me to put myself into the house."
It is not clear how much the entire project cost, and such a project may be out of the price range of most people, there are however many other options available for people living off-grid or building their own small home. In fact, a huge community both online and offline has built up in recent years of people seeking a new life away from the big city and suburbia.
