A mother's Facebook post has gone viral after she shared her 10-year-old son's kind-hearted gesture with the world.
Mandy Fish, who lives in South Africa, told the story of how her son Vaughn spent his savings helping gas-station attendant, Tony, get a new bike.
Vaughn and Tony often spoke while at the gas-station, first coming into contact when Vaughn was sick and Tony's kind words made him feel much better. One day Tony explained he was looking to buy a new bike, but that he didn't want to break the bank. Vaughn, who had been collecting coins around the house over a number of months, decided to donate the money so that Tony could achieve his goal.
Bicycles are key modes of transport among poorer people in South Africa, many of whom live in quite serious poverty and require bikes to get to and from work.
Mandy said in a Facebook post:
"Vaughn has been collecting all the silver money around the house for months, saving for a 'holiday' for us. One night he came to me and asked if I really wanted a holiday and upon asking why he said he would rather put his savings towards helping Tony get his bike… Tony always takes the time to talk to Vaughn about the various bikes we haul to Giba and back and listens so obligingly to him as he chatters away."
She added:
"Our children make us proud on so many occasions but today my heart and his is so full of the joy at the kind man's face as he, rather stunned accepted his gift from this 10-year-old boy."
A Facebook user who witnessed the bike being bought said:
"Saw you and Vaughn leaving Game with this bike and noticed how excited Vaughn was – thought it might be his birthday and this was his first bike! What a very special young man you have, to be that excited about giving someone such a meaningful gift."
