An ammonia leak has been reported at a chemical plant in the city of Sumy in Ukraine. The leak occured on Monday and it is believed to have contaminated an area with a radius of over 2.5 kilometers (approximately 1.5 miles), according to officials.
Dmytro Zhyvytskyy, Sumy's regional governor did not state what was the cause of the leak.
The plant, known as, the Sumykhimprom, is located at the eastern outskirts of the city, which is populated by 263,000 inhabitants.
In recent weeks, the city has been shelled by Russian troops.
Zhyvytskyy said:
"For the center of Sumy, there is no threat now, since the wind does not blow on the city."
He warned that the village of Novoselytsya, which is located 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) southeast of Sumy, is also under threat.
Emergency crews are on the site attempting to contain the leak.
