Star couple David and Victoria Beckham have pledged £1 million to assist the people of Ukraine.
The couple has pledged £1 million of their own money and at the same time launched an appeal through UNICEF to help raise more funds for those displaced by the brutal Russian invasion.
A source close to the Beckhams told the UK newspaper The Daily Mail:
"David and Victoria personally donated £1m to the emergency appeal set up via David's dedicated 7 Fund for UNICEF. They wanted to do everything they could to help UNICEF in their work on the ground in Ukraine. David has been a Goodwill Ambassador for 17 years and raises millions a year to support UNICEF and their work for children around the world."
David spoke out on his Instagram following the invasion which has displaced as many as 10 million people, saying:
"Like you I have watched the situation in Ukraine unfold in horror and disbelief. Mothers forced to flee with their children. Families torn apart. Children taken from their beds to become refugees overnight. With my family safe around me, I felt the helplessness we all share when faced with scenes of despair."
Adding:
"Victoria and I have made a donation on behalf of our family to kickstart the appeal. We would be so grateful if you could join us in helping UNICEF support these children. Please give what you can today."
This isn't the only way in which the Beckham's are assisting the Ukrainian people. At the weekend David announced that he was handing over control of his social media channels to a Ukrainian doctor who is working in the besieged city of Kharkiv in the East of the country.
Dr Iryna, head of a regional perinatal centre in Ukraine's second largest city will now use the channel to highlight the work being done by medical professionals to help the wounded amidst dire conditions.
Dr Iryna has said already via the account:
"The first days were the most difficult. We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes. We are probably risking our lives but we don't think about it at all. We love our work. Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry but none of us will give up."
