The Taliban are not allowing Afghan girls to return to schools, reversing the decision initially made. They say that there still remains to be decided what uniforms the students must wear in order to be able to attend school.
The schools in Afghanistan were set to open after the Taliban took power in August. However, the ministry of education recently announced that secondary schools for girls would remain shut.
Girls were seen in tears and anger after the decision was reversed at the last minute.
The decision was announced only a week after the ministry had stated that all students, including female students, would return to their studies on Wednesday.
The ministry said:
"We inform all girls' high schools and those schools that [have] female students above class six that they are off until the next order."
The announcement also stated that schools would reopen only once a decision over the uniforms worn by female students was made in accordance with the 'Sharia law and Afghan tradition'.
The sudden shift caused disappointment and anger from both parents and students.
