Vangelis became one of the most famous music writers in the world throughout his lifetime, particularly in the field of movies, where he composed the scores for major films such as Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner. The soundtrack to Chariots of Fire remains one of the most well-known and critically acclaimed movie soundtracks in history.
He was born in the Greek town of Agria in Thessaly but grew up in Athens and held a strong interest in music from a very young age, composing short pieces from the age of 4. This was in spite of the fact that Vangelis did not have formal musical training, and would never study music academically at any point during his life.
