In 2015, David Bahnson, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Vermont, invented a way to combine two of his favourite things in the world, dogs and kayaking. He built a specifically designed kayak that carries dogs.
David adjusted a kayak baggage opening into a 'dog-shapes hole' which, although lacked capacity for another person, it was perfectly suited for his dog, Susie. He also placed a removable ring to prevent water from splashing in.
He told Huffington Post:
"Our dogs have always loved to travel with us in cars, in my airplane, in boats. Building a way for them to kayak with us just seemed like a logical choice, and the boats are fun to build anyway."
After getting a second dog, Ginger, David made more room by adding a second vessel specially designed for her.
He told The Dodo:
"It's like a triple kayak."
With a kayak able to carry his dogs, David can now pursue his favourite hobby while having his dogs by his side to share the experience.
He said:
"They seem to love it. They get excited when we'd pull the kayaks out and see that we were going. They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go."
