A man in Chile has disappeared after accidentally being paid 286 times his salary. The incident took place in May, and the man had then promised his boss that he would return the money that he was overpaid.
The company the man was working for accidentally paid him 165,398,851 Chilean pesos instead of 500,000 pesos - the amount of his agreed salary. The man's normal monthly salary is the equivalent of AUD$790 (£450), while the amount he was accidentally paid is about AUD$260,000 (£148,000).
Diario Financiero, a financial news website, reported that the company the man was working for, Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos (Cial), is one of Chile's largest cold-cut meat producers.
After the banking error was noticed, Cial promptly contacted the man to request for the mistaken payment back.
According to the company, the man said that he would go back to work the following day and return the overpaid amount, however he never showed up. Although his employers made repeated attempts to contact the man through calls, texts and What's App, they were unable to reach him.
On the 2nd of June, the man resigned from his position through a lawyer. Cial has now launched legal action against him.
According to legal documents obtained by Diario Financiero:
"He was informed and clarified that this money did not correspond to the payment of any service."
