In a bizarre move, Russian politicians have blamed their failures in Ukraine on what they allege are Ukrainian super soldiers created using biological experiments.
The claim, with no scientific or fact-based evidence, came from Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of Russia's Federation Council, and Irina Yarovaya, deputy chair of the State Duma, who said that Russian scientific research that examined captured Ukrainian prisoners of war showed they had a range of diseases caused by experiments within US biolabs stationed in Ukraine.
Russia has long touted a conspiracy theory that the US has biological weapon manufacturing facilities in Ukraine.
In a statement to reporters, the Russian lawmakers said:
"And we see: the cruelty and barbarity with which the military personnel of Ukraine behave, the crimes that they commit against the civilian population, those monstrous crimes that they commit against prisoners of war, confirm that this system for the control and creation of a cruel murder machine was implemented under the management of the United States. And those performance enhancing drugs that they are still given in order to completely neutralize the last traces of human consciousness and turn them into the most cruel and deadly monsters also confirm this."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised continual Russian misinformation, much of it spread online. He said recently:
"This sometimes takes on simply unhealthy forms when social networks and websites deliberately stuff fake information from Russia, the purpose of which is only one—to add media terror to the missile and artillery terror against our country. It is obvious that any missiles and artillery of Russia will not succeed in breaking our unity and knocking us off our path. And it should be equally obvious that Ukrainian unity cannot be broken by lies or intimidation, fake information or conspiracy theories."
Russian has now focused much of its attack on the Donbass region after its attack on Kyiv was defeated and they were forced into a humiliating retreat caused by poor logistics, poor morale, poorly trained conscripts, and fierce Ukrainian resistance.
