The new Russian replacement for McDonald’s has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, after patrons took to the internet and social media to voice their disgust at the quality of food being served up.
Vkusno i Tochka replaced McDonald's restaurants in Russia earlier this year after the fast-food company withdrew from all activities within the Russian Federation in response to Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine.
The reports from those eating at the restaurants include the fact that burgers have been sold on mouldy buns, that insects have been found in the food, and that it just does not taste of a high-quality.
Ksenia Sobchak, a TV celebrity and a member of Russia’s opposition, took to the Telegram encryption platform to share her thoughts, she said:
“Vkusno i Tochka sells mouldy burgers. It looks like they do not quite honour the standards of McDonald’s, at least in terms of product quality control. Today at least three cases were recorded of burgers with mouldy buns sold to customers. Two of them were for my subscribers.”
Adding:
“I don’t think it’s OK when you find mould. Figure it out, guys, you don’t need to poison people.”
What then followed was a series of photographs showing just how bad the food was, with followers revolted by what they saw. Other posters complained that the cheeseburgers had very little meat and that some sauces were past their ‘use-by’ date.
All local McDonald's franchises, of which there are 850 in Russia, were sold to Russian millionaire Alexander Govor, who promised food like McDonalds ‘but better’.
Pro-Putin forces within the country have described the reviews as ‘fake news’.
Mcdonald's was one of the first companies to open in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union, it had therefore been operating in Russia for over 30 years at the time of its departure. Russia is currently experiencing a dramatic collapse in its economy amid sanctions from Western nations.
